Le temps se ralentit, la lumière est intense. Les mouvements sont plus lents, il n’est pas question d’aller vite. Les yeux se ferment face à l’intensité lumineuse sauf à se cacher derrière des verres sombres. Il est ainsi plus aisé de pouvoir absorber les lieux, les lire avec cette lenteur apaisante propre aux instants où la température extérieure s’impose à soi, aux autres, à la nature. Chacun courbe l’échine sans arriver à la vaincre. C’est bien un temps plus calme qui s’impose à tous. Ces images blanches réduisent volontairement l’échelle des variations d’intensité des noirs et des blancs, au même titre que la tiédeur a disparu de ces instants. Bribes de lieux, paysages, ces images s’enchainent au gré des chemins parcourus et des rencontres.

Time slows down, the light is intense. Movements are slower, there is no intention of going fast. The blinding sun causes eyes to close. But not those hidden behind dark lenses, which facilitate acknowledging the environment, reading it with the soothing calmness specific to moments when ourselves, the others and nature are facing the heat.  Everyone is bending the knee, not able to stand back up. It undeniably is a calm time imposed upon all. Those white photographs voluntarily blur the lines between whites and blacks, just like the freshness that faded away. Fragments of the places and landscapes, this series follows the pathways taken and encounters.

Plusieurs séjours au Portugal pour mieux percevoir l’atmosphère de ce pays, Lisbonne mais pas que. Sous une chaleur pesante, j’ai appréhendé ces lieux qui oscillent entre authenticité et tourisme de masse. Entre le ciel bleu, les rivières, la mer, la campagne, il est toujours utile de pouvoir s’y perdre pour profiter du hasard et capter une réalité qui ne se laisse pas toujours saisir. Avant de rendre compréhensibles ces lieux pour les autres, encore a-t-il fallu les ressentir soi-même pour pouvoir rendre compte ces impressions en image. Il aura ainsi fallu déambuler sans but, les yeux bien ouverts.

2018, I spent few weeks in Portugal, I had time to feel the atmosphere of this country, Lisbon but not only. Under the sun and in almost unbearable heat, I needed time to better understand these endearing towns, between authenticity and mass tourism. Between colors of the towns, a blue sky, rivers, sea, I needed to get lost in the streets, always a good way to be able to get closer real people in real places to understand real lives. As usual, I made me invisible when I took pictures to capture those instants of reality, to take pictures close to the actions. It’s also the question to be in the good place at the good moment, even if it’s not enough to bring exacting eye to bear on things : I need to understand what I see, I need to make it comprehensible for the others, with the filter of my eyes and my way to watch.
It was a good time of wandering.

Evidemment géographique : c’est ici le plus évident même si volontairement les photographies ne donnent à voir aucun signe visuel immédiatement explicite des lieux parcourus. Il faut s’interroger pour les découvrir. Evidemment spatial et humain : les grands espaces à l’urbanité maîtrisée de la Neva font face aux scènes suédoises emplies des signes d’une urbanité bien présente. Les cadrages varient entre détails et points de vue élargis. Mais la position du regardeur est ici toujours traduite au travers d’une neutralité feinte pour laisser s’exprimer l’espace en premier lieu.
Obviously a geographical approach : this is here the most obvious, even though the stills give no immediate explicit visual sight of the places traveled. One must wonder to discover them. Obviously a spatial and human approach : the great outdoors with restrained urbanity from the Neva are outfacing those swedish scenes filled with signs of well-established urbanity. The framings wander between details and expanded viewpoints. However, the position of the viewer is here always translated trough a feigned neutrality to allow the space to express itself in the first place.

Regarder n’est pas anodin. Evidemment.  Cette action provoque une tension entre soi et l’autre qu’il soit inerte ou vivant : c’est bien l’acte de regarder qui créé le lien entre ces photographies. Les lieux sont divers mais ont pour point commun d’être support à observation, divers également. Elle peut être béate, admirative, faite d’attente, en toute quiétude ou dans l’agitation. L’élément observé apparait ou non, il n’y a pas de règle. L’objectif vise ainsi à fixer ce non-dit institué par le regard de celui ou celle qui regarde, lui-même observé dans son comportement.
To watch is not anodyne.Of course. This action creates a link between the one who watches and the one who is watched. These pictures  take care of these invisible links in spaces that are special places for training the capacity to observe. The observer can be blissful, impressed, quiet or irritated. What is being watched appears or not in the pictures, there is no rule. The objective to achieve for the serie is to reveal the links between the different players from this game, watch and be watched.
